Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Top-Load Design?
Luggage has traditionally opened one way — split it open like a book. The classic clamshell splits 50/50, and designs like Rimowa's 70/30 split improved on that by giving you a deeper packing side and a shallower lid. Both are proven designs and we sell split cases too.
The Top-Load is our 2.0 approach. It opens from the top — like a top-load washer — so you pack and access everything from above without ever laying your suitcase flat. It uses 50% less footprint than a split case when open, which matters in tight hotel rooms, cruise cabins, and crowded airports.
Inside is one large open interior — no split, no compromise on space. It expands up to 2 inches when you need extra capacity, and comes with compression straps so when you pack less you can cinch everything in place. A removable divider panel lets you separate shoes from clothes, dirty from clean, or gear from formalwear — however you want to organize it.
It is ideal for cruise travel where you are living out of your luggage for a week and need formalwear, layers, and multiple outfits. It is built for ski trips and equestrian weekends where bulky items like base layers, helmets, and gear accessories take up real space. And it is a favorite for family travel where you are packing for yourself and your kids — the expansion option means one bag instead of two.
You still lay it flat to open, but instead of splitting it wide like a book and exposing everything to the person next to you, the lid lifts straight up and holds at 90 degrees — like the trunk of a car. Your contents stay private, your footprint stays compact, and you can access everything from above without sprawling your belongings across an airport floor or hotel room.
What makes Arlo Skye different from other luggage brands?
Arlo Skye was founded by former Louis Vuitton and TUMI execs who spent a collective 23 years working on luxury products and travel goods. Every product is designed in New York with the same attention to materials and detail you would expect from a luxury house, but sold directly to you at a fraction of the price.
Our luggage uses German Makrolon polycarbonate shells, ultra-quiet Japanese Hinomoto ball-bearing swivel wheels (50mm diameter for carry-ons, 60mm diameter for checked luggage for superior maneuverability), antimicrobial lined interiors that eliminate odors, and a simple yet effective X-strap compression system. We pioneered the first ejectable power bank system in a carry-on and introduced a top-load trunk design that opens like a top-load washer for easier packing, less strain, and takes up 50% less footprint.
Our signature champagne colorway, minimalist aesthetic, and thoughtful details have earned recognition from Condé Nast Traveler, who voted Arlo Skye the #1 carry-on. We have also collaborated with brands like Audi, Palihouse Hotels, Auberge Resorts, and Dusen Dusen for MoMA Design Stores.
How is it different from Rimowa, TUMI, Briggs & Riley, Away, Monos, and July trunks?
Those trunks use a 70/30 or 80/20 split — a design Rimowa popularized that the rest of the industry cloned. The trunk silhouette was originally designed for bulky items that don't fit in a standard clamshell, but the split-lid design undermines that purpose. You still lay it flat to open it, and the shallow lid side still flips over and needs somewhere to land. When that side is packed heavy, the case becomes unbalanced and tips forward, pulling down on the zipper or frame closure and warping it over time. Arlo Skye's top-load design works differently. The lid opens upward and is held in place by two built-in straps that keep it perpendicular — nothing flips over, nothing needs to land somewhere. One deep chamber where weight sits low and centered, packing from above the way a top-load washer works.
Will this fit in the overhead bin?
Yes — it fits comfortably in overhead bins and airline sizers. We have tested the Carry-On Max on all major US and international airlines. Our customers confirm the same, including on smaller regional jets like CRJs.
The Carry-On Max is approximately 12% larger than the standard 22 x 14 x 9 inch carry-on dimensions, giving you meaningfully more packing space without sacrificing overhead compatibility.
Overhead compartments and sizers are built with tolerance to accommodate luggage from thousands of brands, all of which vary slightly in shape and dimension. That tolerance is why the Carry-On Max fits without issue while giving you extra room that most carry-ons don't.
What is Arlo Skye's warranty on luggage?
Arlo Skye luggage is backed by a 5-year warranty covering manufacturing defects in parts and workmanship for the original owner.
The warranty does not cover cosmetic wear such as scratches, dents, scuffs, or stains that occur during normal use, nor damage caused by intentional abuse.
If your luggage is damaged by an airline, file a claim directly with the airline first, then contact us. We are happy to send you a replacement part or repair your bag. We don't make a profit on any repairs or parts — we just want to keep you traveling with your Arlo Skye.
For minor repairs like locks, handles, and wheels on polycarbonate cases, we ship replacement parts with step-by-step instructions at no charge.
If your luggage needs to come in for service at one of our repair centers in Florida or New York, parts and labor are free. A $20 flat shipping fee applies for round-trip transit — we subsidize the remainder of the shipping cost. Turnaround is typically 1–5 business days once received.
The warranty applies to purchases made through arloskye.com and authorized retailers only. Products purchased on secondary marketplaces such as eBay, Amazon, or Etsy are not covered. For full details visit arloskye.com/pages/warranty.

For Cruise Travelers
Why is the Top-Load Trunk better than the large split case?
Cruise cabins average 150 to 185 square feet. Every inch of floor space you lose to an open suitcase is an inch you feel all week. Traditional clamshell luggage forces you to lay the case flat on the floor or bed just to reach one item — in a room already shared by two or four people. The Arlo Skye Top-Load Trunk opens from the top. Stand it against a wall, pop it open, grab what you need, close it. Your cabin stays yours.
How does it actually work in a small stateroom?
Every cruise blog tells you to store your suitcase under the bed to reclaim room. None of them solve what happens next — when you need your swimsuit before the pool, your jacket before dinner, your charger at midnight. With a clamshell, that means pulling it out, laying it flat, and surrendering your floor. The top-load design means you never have to open your suitcase across the room again. Access everything with the trunk standing upright, then slide it back. It can even sit on a luggage rack, since you're opening upward instead of outward. The daily suitcase shuffle is over.
Who is the trunk for?
Whether you're a couple sharing one trunk between two wardrobes, a solo traveler packing formal and casual without playing Tetris, or a family trying to keep four people's clothes in one findable place — the trunk simplifies the math. One deep, continuous chamber with 125 liters of expanded capacity replaces the two shallow halves of a clamshell. Use the removable divider to separate clean from dirty, or packing cubes to divide by person or by day. Everything is visible from above, accessible without dismantling the rest of your packing.
How do I keep my valuables secure in a cruise cabin?
Stateroom safes on most cruise lines measure 6 to 12 inches — barely enough for a passport and phone. They cannot hold a camera, tablet, laptop, or the spare cash and documents you carry for port days. The trunk's integrated TSA-compliant combination lock turns the entire suitcase into a full-size secure vault. When you're at dinner, at the pool, or off the ship, zip it closed and lock it. Passports, meds, electronics, and valuables — all contained, all protected, in a space far larger than the cabin safe.
What makes it built for ocean travel specifically?
Your luggage goes through terminal porters, conveyor belts, ship loading zones, and humid storage before it ever reaches your cabin — and then it lives in a moisture-rich environment for a week or more. The German-engineered virgin polycarbonate shell resists scratches, dents, and water. The antimicrobial lining neutralizes the odor that inevitably builds inside a sealed suitcase over a 7 to 14 day sailing. Cruise ship corridors are fully carpeted for noise dampening, and cheap plastic wheels drag and catch at every surface transition — Hinomoto silent-run spinner wheels glide smoothly through terminals on boarding day and effortlessly over carpeted corridors and cabin thresholds all week. And the FreeFlex zipper expands by 2.25 inches — because you're coming home with more than you left with.
