Back to School Travel Tips

Back to School Travel Tips

Whether you’re headed back to campus or helping someone else get there, back-to-school travel doesn’t have to be chaotic. Between TSA lines, overstuffed duffels, and “Did I forget my charger?” anxiety, there’s a better way to start the semester. Below are 10 intelligent, non-cliché tips to make your transition smoother—on the road and once you’ve arrived.

1. Pack around your heaviest items.

Rather than starting with socks or toiletries, begin packing with your heaviest or bulkiest item—like sneakers or that hardcover bio textbook. Then fill in around it. This keeps your bag balanced and protects fragile items from getting crushed.

2. Choose luggage that nests when you're done.

Dorms aren’t known for storage space. Once unpacked, luggage that nests neatly into each other makes life easier. Stash it in a closet or under the bed without taking up your entire floor plan.

3. Master the art of the humble Ziplock.

You don’t always need fancy packing cubes to stay organized. Gallon-sized transparent zip bags work just as well for separating socks, chargers, and toiletries. Plus, TSA agents will thank you (and you’ll thank yourself during the 1 a.m. dorm unpack).

4. Upgrade your dopp kit game.

You’ll live out of it for at least a few days, so make it count. A structured, waterproof dopp kit holds up during travel and actually looks good sitting on your bathroom shelf.

5. Don’t underestimate the power of an extension cord.

Airports, dorms, and hotel rooms all have one thing in common: outlets in the most inconvenient places. A slim, three-prong extension cord will make you—and your parents—heroes of move-in day.

6. Go beyond the desk.

Your bed, the floor, and your friend’s room will all become your workspace. A lightweight, breathable lap desk with storage keeps your laptop cool, your legs comfortable, and your posture in check during long late-night sessions.

7. Build a “first 24” bag.

Whether your luggage is delayed or you just can’t face unpacking, keep a small tote or backpack with your chargers, a fresh outfit, meds, and snacks. It’ll get you through the first day, no matter what.

8. Label your gear like you’ll forget everything.

Chargers, water bottles, dopp kits, even your suitcase—it’s shocking how fast things go missing in shared spaces like dorms, lounges, and airports. Use a subtle label, AirTag, or even a piece of washi tape with your initials. It’s low-effort, high-payoff peace of mind.

9. Pack a notebook and pen. Yes, even in 2025.

Orientation meetings, class intros, Wi-Fi passwords—sometimes analog is faster, clearer, and sticks better than your Notes app.

10. Don’t underestimate durability.

Your luggage isn’t just for one trip. It’s your moving companion, footrest, and occasional seat. Invest in one with reinforced corners, silent wheels, and a zipper that won’t mutiny halfway up the stairs.
